Carpet Cleaning 101

In the 15 years in service, Quest Floor Care owner and operator Joseph Rodgers has dedicated the time and effort to become a certified Master Textile Cleaner. Along the way, he learned that there are three basic steps to ANY cleaning process. It doesn’t matter if it’s your kitchen counter, carpet, or a historic brick floor that has been around for hundreds of years.

Those cleaning steps are as follows:

  1. Spray: spray cleaning solution onto the surface
  2. Scrub: break up the dirt on the surface and suspend it in the cleaning solution
  3. Extract: remove soiling & residue from the cleaner, from the area that you’re cleaning

First, Quest Floor Care starts by applying the cleaning solution onto the carpet. Next, we use a state-of-the-art machine specifically designed for scrubbing carpet to break up any and all soiling that may be present. Finally, it’s time to extract (or rinse) all of that dirt out of the carpet.

Hot Water Extraction (aka "Steam Cleaning")

A lot of people call what Quest Floor Care does “steam cleaning." We get it!  The water we use is extremely hot. When it comes out of the wand, sometimes a little steam will come off the sides. However, cleaning industry professionals call it hot water extraction or “HWE."  There are things that pressurized steam is good for cleaning, but carpet is not one of them.

When Quest Floor Care's founder was a kid, his Mom taught him to clean/rinse dishes with hot water, because it “cleans better." Turns out, the science is right: for every 18°F that the water temperature increases, the chemical action will double, thereby increasing the “cleaning power." Who knew? Well, aside from Moms everywhere.

The Quest Floor Care Carpet Cleaning Process

Carpet Cleaning for a Fresher, Cleaner Home

If you need carpet cleaning, don’t worry…you have come to the right place. Quest Floor Care has spent years refining the process of how to help people who want clean carpet and clear answers. You should not have to guess what will be done in your home after talking to a salesperson that quite obviously just wants you to say “Yes, go ahead”. You should know the plan, and you should know why it works. You should also have clear expectations of what’s going to happen after speaking to company reps.

“As Owner/Operator of Quest Floor Care, my goal is simple. I want your carpet to look better, feel better, and dry as quickly as possible. I also want the service to feel easy from start to finish. That means I’ll explain what I see when I look at your carpet, what I will be doing to clean it, and why it matters to the end result.”
                      – Joseph Rogers

Cleaning your carpet can change the overall “feel” of a room, FAST. It can make the room feel brighter, and help remove unwanted odors. It will even remove the ground in soil that has been walked on over time, and make your home feel more cared for.

Quest Floor Care has earned great reviews from happy clients because we take the work seriously. We do not rush through the job and hope for the best, we have clearly defined processes, the right tools, and lots of education. Joseph is a certified Master Textile Cleaner, and in 2024 sat on the committee that revamped the IICRC Carpet Cleaning Technician curriculum.

What Separates Us From Other Companies?

Carpet cleaning is not just a machine, some hoses, and a wand. The machine helps, of course. Effective rinsing, strength of vacuum, and airflow…they all matter. But the person doing the work is what REALLY differentiates the quality of work.

Every home (and job) is a little different. Some rooms have dark paths from foot traffic, some have pet spots, some have food and drink spills, and some have carpet that is worn. These each need to be handled in a specific way, for best results.

The Carpet Cleaning Process

Good carpet cleaning (or cleaning ANYTHING, for that matter) has a flow. I like to call it “Cleaning 101”, and the three steps are “Spray”, “Scrub”, and “Extract”.

Spray: The pre-spray loosens soiling, making it easier to remove. Letting it dwell for a bit gives the prespray time to soften the accumulated soiling.

Scrub:The scrub step helps to break all of the soiling loose from the carpet fiber. Picture using a scrub brush on the dishes, and you get the idea.

Extract: This step is what actually removes the soil, and is best compared to washing your hair. When these steps are implemented together, effectively, it produces the best possible results for your carpet.

Step 1: Carpet Inspection

First, I inspect the carpet with you. I look for stains, traffic lanes, pet spots, loose seams, and worn areas. I also ask if there are any particular areas of concern for you, and if there’s even a HINT of a question concerning pet accidents, I have a UV light I can use to inspect the carpet for that kind of thing. The UV inspection is performed as a courtesy, as it provides me with critical information I need to to do my job, and as a result it’s performed at no extra charge.

This is important, because it helps me determine how I move forward, and what processes will be needed for effective cleaning. It also helps me point out any areas that may need extra care.

It’s very rare that I’m unable to get a spot or stain out of the carpet. “Spots” are defined as a substance ON the carpet fiber that needs to be physically removed. Think of the spot you’ll see if you drop fried chicken on the carpet…it’s a little bit of grease sitting there on top of the carpet. That’s a spot. A “stain”, on the other hand, is when you’ve had dye transfer in or out of the carpet fiber itself. Think of bleach stains (remove dye from the carpet), or where someone spilled red Kool-Aid on the carpet (adds dye to the carpet). You can clean those all day long, and it won’t change it. Different processes are necessary to fix that kind of thing.

Step 2: Pre-Treat Spots and Traffic Lanes

Spots also need the right plan. Coffee, grease, red dye, mud, and pet urine do not act the same way. The wrong product can make a spot worse. There’s not much that won’t come out of the carpet, with the right product, and a bit of education and know-how.

Step 3: Gently Scrub the Carpet

After the pre-spray has time to work, the carpet often needs a scrub. This does not mean rough treatment. It means the fiber gets a proper scrubbing with a machine that has one of several pads or brushes (specifically designed to work on carpet) depending on the type of fabric and how dirty it is.

Think of washing your hands. Soap helps. Rubbing your hands helps more. Carpet works in a similar way. The cleaning solution needs to be worked into the carpet after being sprayed on. The goal is to loosen soil without harming the carpet. Good tools and good judgment matter here.

Step 4: Rinse and Extract

The rinse step is where soil, cleaner, and water are removed. A good, effective, rinse leaves the carpet cleaner and fresher, by removing as much of the cleaning solution as possible. Residue in the carpet can make carpet get dirty much more quickly, and the traffic lanes will be darker and more obvious.

The goal is not just to make the carpet look good for one day…the goal is to leave it clean in a way that lasts.

Step 5: Drying the Carpet

Dry time can vary, but I generally tell people to expect the carpet to dry in 4-12 hours. It depends on the density of the carpet (how many fibers per square inch), the air flow, and the humidity. Drying is a process, and the what moisture is left behind after extraction will need to evaporate, and the more airflow that is present, the quicker this will happen. Before I leave, I will let you know what to expect.

What Carpet Cleaning Can Help With

Professional carpet cleaning can help with a lot of common issues. It can remove tracked-in soil. It can freshen dull rooms. It can improve traffic lanes. It can help with mild odors. It can make your home feel cleaner.

It is also helpful after normal life has done its work. Kids play. Pets run. Guests visit. Shoes bring in grit. Food gets dropped. Drinks spill. Carpet takes the hit every day.

Pet homes may need a closer look. Some pet spots are on the surface. Some have gone deeper. A light issue may clean up with normal care. A strong urine issue may need a deeper plan.

Stain removal depends on the stain. It also depends on how old it is and what has been used on it before. Some spots come out with normal cleaning. Some need extra work. Some are permanent. I will tell you the truth about that.

Residential Carpet Cleaning

In homes, I focus on clean results and low stress. I know you are letting me into your space, and I appreciate and respect that. I protect your home as I work. I watch corners, walls, floors, and furniture, to be sure I leave your home like I found it. I’ll happily answer any questions you may have, as I go.

There are different reasons to have your carpets cleaned, in my experience. Some people call before the holidays, because they have guests coming in, and some call afterwards, because they just HAD guests, and need the house cleaned up so they can live there. Some call before moving in, or after moving out, or because the traffic lanes have finally become too hard to ignore.

No matter the reason, the goal is the same. You want carpet that looks better. You want a room that feels fresh. You want the job done with care.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning

Quest Floor Care also helps with commercial carpet cleaning. This can include offices, churches, rental units, shops, and other local spaces. Commercial carpet tends to get heavy use. It sees more shoes, more spills, and more soil. It can also affect how people feel when they walk into your space.

A clean floor helps your business look more cared for. It helps staff, clients, guests, and tenants feel better in the space. It also helps you get (and stay) ahead of a heavy soil load before it becomes a bigger issue. Some spaces need a deep clean once or twice a year. Some need entry areas and halls cleaned more often. I can help you build a plan that fits the way your space is used.

Joseph with Quest Floor Care was very professional and effective in treating and cleaning our upstairs carpets in our home before placing it on the market. He listened to what we needed and did not try to upsell us on other areas or services. Joseph sanitized and cleaned our carpets, and likely played a role in us receiving multiple offers shortly after our house hit the market. He will be who we contact when we need any similar services in our new home."
